Alpha Phi Alpha marches to fight cancer

Brother Race Headen is leading the way for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Beta Psi Lambda Chapter (Los Angeles) in raising funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Baldwin Hills.

“There is probably no place you can look and not find someone affected by cancer, directly or indirectly,” Brother Headen said.  “We have all been affected by cancer.  While you are reading this "Why I Relay" statement, there is someone close to you now fighting the battle.  I have decided that while I still have my health; I will use it to relay for someone who cannot relay for them self.  In doing so, I hope that we make cancer a thing of the past.  Thank you for helping me to help others.”

Brother Headen has set a chapter goal of raising $10,000.  To donate, visit

The Relay for Life of Baldwin Hills will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the Yvonne B Burke Athletic Complex, located at 5401 S. Fairfax Ave.  Community members have joined teams, and team members will walk for 24 hours (in shifts).  The event goes from 9 a.m. on Saturday to 9 a.m. the next day.  For more information about this event, visit and follow them on Facebook.

“There are so many that have been affected directly or indirectly by cancer,” Brother Headen said.  “We decided to put our effort and weight into this event to fight back.  We all have lost love ones, losing love ones, and some have survived. We fight for them all. Please join us in this fight to kick cancer's ass.  It's a 12-round fight and we plan to fight until the bell.  The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Beta Psi Lambda Chapter thank you very much.”
